Trekking (Bale Mountains Trekking)

Bale Mountains are formed from lava outpouring of the Miocene and Oligocene geological periods. The lavas covered the underlying rock formations. This area has varied climate as a result of variation in altitude. It gains 8 months of rainfall, from March to October. The highland part gets on average 1200 mm. rain per annum. The temperature ranges from –15 to +260c.

This park has five vegetation zones among which Adaba-Dodolla area is the southwest part/region. This place is well known for trekkers. The major attractions in this region are topographical scenery, mountain vegetation dominated by Juniperous procera, coniferous podocarpus, Haginia abyssinica, and St.John’s wort, giant heather and red-hot poker.

Day 1: After breakfast drive to Langano. En route, pause at river Awash and Lake Ziway for bird watching. Lunch at Ziway then, proceed to Lake Langano. After check in to Sabana Resort Hotel, visit the Abyata-Shalla lakes park rich in bird life. Then back to the shore of Langano where some more birds can be seen.

Day 2: After breakfast drive to Dodolla the starting point of this trekking route, travel to Wahoro campsite (3300m), 3hrs. The vegetation changes to temperate type. The common birds in this area are tick billed raven, white collared pigeon, Wattled ibis etc. O/n camping.

Day 3: After breakfast, trek to Angafo campsite 3080m, 5hrs. The vegetation cover changes to Afro alpine type like Juniper, Podocarpus and Haginia abyssinica. O/N camping.

Day 4: After breakfast, trek to Molelicho campsite (3350m), 6hrs through a panoramic terrain. This place has a panoramic view to Harenna forest as well.

Day 5: After breakfast trek to Duro campsite (approximately 6-8hrs). This environment is suitable for game viewing like Mountain Nyala, Menelik’s bushbuck, vervet monkey etc. O/n camping.

Day 6: After breakfast trek to Morobawa campsite (4-5hrs.) through the volcanic formations and the tranquil montane forest. O/n camping.

Day 7: After breakfast trek to Keyenssa campsite (6-8hrs). Plants like heath, red-hot poker, become common. Birds like Lammergeier, black kite, Wattled ibis, Black headed forest oriole etc can be seen here. O/n camping.

Day 8: After breakfast trek to Rafu (7-8hrs). Enjoy the scenery. O/N Camping.

Day 9: After breakfast trek to Gebre-Guracha campsite (4hrs). Mooreland vegetation like Giant lobelia and everlastings become dominant. O/n camping.

Day 10: After breakfast trek to Senate and the summit of Tulu Dimtu (4377m), the second highest peak in the country. Mammals like Ethiopian wolf and giant mole rat and birds like Lammergeier, Auger buzzard, Blue winged goose etc can be seen. Then, meet the car and drive to Goba for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 11: After breakfast drive to Addis Ababa stop at the head quarter of the park for game viewing.

Note: This program can be shortened or extended based on the need of our clients. Visitors who want to trek through Simen and Bale Mountains National parks need to be aware of that they will face high elevation up to 4620masl that may result in acute altitude sickness. So, it is necessary to acclimatize themselves to high elevation a few days ahead of their tour.
